What to Do When You Have the Flu

Though highly contagious, in the majority of cases, the flu is not serious. If you have the flu, stay in bed, drink plenty of fluids, and wait at least 24 hours after your fever is gone before you allow yourself back in the general public. Wash your hands often, and if you cannot avoid going into any public spaces, wear a face mask. In most cases you will be back on your feet within a few days.

However, if your flu symptoms don’t begin to improve within several days, if your fever does not break, or if your symptoms lessen and then return, it is time to make an appointment with your doctor. If you are not able to make a same day appointment, urgent care clinics accept a wide range of insurance and are able to accommodate walk in patients with very little wait time.

High Risk Groups

If you are part of a high risk group, do not wait it out. If you are a pregnant woman, have a chronic lung or heart disease, or your young child is sick, there is a greater chance of developing serious complications such as pneumonia. In these circumstances it is best to make a doctor’s appointment or a same day appointment at an urgent care location as soon as you notice any flu like symptoms.
